What is Pilonidal sinus

Pilonidal sinus is also known as sacral pit ,tailbone abscess, pilonidal cyst. It is found at the tail bone of spine or at the gluteal cleft region .Pilonidal sinus or pilonidal cyst occur due to the hairs of the gluteal cleft region become ungrown and that nest of hairs stay beneth the skin and become infected  (pus),at the sacral region infected hair and pus collect in a cyst form which further develop the sinus tract( tiny hole) at the  tail bone, because of this infection patient complain of continuous pain and pus discharge from the sinus tract at tail bone.

  • To diagnose pilonidal sinus, your doctor may check your sacral region for any redness, swelling and boil.
  • Your doctor will press your tail bone and will check your pus or blood drainage from sinus track and tenderness.
  • If multiple sinus tract present at sacral region which is also the sign of pilonidal sinus.


  • Your doctor will also recommend you ultrasound and MRI investigation to rule out the abscess cavity of pilonidal cyst.


Here are some home remedies for pilonidal sinus-

  • WARM COMPRESSES- A washcloth, soaked in a hot water will help the fluid and pus accumulated within the cysts to drain quickly and healing process will begin.
  • TEA TREE OIL- This oil has healing and curative powers in the form of antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, which can keep an infection at bay.
  • APPLE CIDAR VINEGAR- It is an anti-inflammatory property helps reduce pain and inflammation. A cotton ball soaked in this vinegar and can be placed directly at infected area.

  1. OPEN SURGERY– People who simply have a dimple or sinus tract that has not become infected or inflamed do not generally require any immediate treatment. However, an infected pilonidal cyst may become a pilonidal abscess that requires incision and drainage in order to improve. This procedure is generally followed in following way-
  • This procedure is done by numbing the area with a local anesthetic and making an incision with a scalpel over the infected area to open the abscess cavity.
  • The pus is drained, and any accumulated hair and debris are removed. The wound is cleaned with saline solution , packed with gauze, and covered with a bandage.
  • Unless any sign of a spreading skin infection are present, antibiotics are generally not necessary.

The wound packing will be removed by your physician, the wound will be examined, and repacking of the wound may be required if there is still purulent drainage.
